Six people have been arrested and a number of stop and searches carried out following an operation in Barnsley aimed at tackling and preventing burglaries.
Focusing in and around the town centre, the four-day operation saw officers apprehend five men and one woman in relation to reported burglaries.
Out of those arrested, two men have been charged and will appear in court next month.
T/Detective Chief Inspector Jon Cousins, said: “As a result of intelligence gathered over recent months, and a continued commitment to eliminating crime across Barnsley, we decided to run a dedicated operation to protect the most vulnerable areas in the town and identify repeat offenders.
“Both plain clothed detectives and uniformed officers worked on this initiative, working into the early hours of the morning to respond to any reports of burglaries, as well as actively patrolling the areas to pick up on any suspicious activity.
“On the first day of the operation a man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of burglary after neighbours reported hearing banging at an address in the Honeywell area.
“Over the course of the operation a further four arrests were made and a total of eight crimes detected. We charged one man in relation to three of those crimes.
“Not only that, but through extensive foot patrols we managed to engage and speak to a number of people, offering advice on how they can keep their homes safe and the importance of reporting a burglary or an attempted break-in to us.”
A total of six stop and searches were also carried out as part of the operation.
T/DCI Cousins added: “We are always looking for opportunities to engage with the public and this operation enabled us to do just that.
“Burglaries often leave people afraid to be in their own home and can have long lasting impacts on victims, not to mention items of sentimental value can be taken. Our officers are committed to tackling burglaries across Barnsley, and residents can expect to see further targeted operations carried out across the district in the future to ensure offenders are arrested and brought to justice for these intrusive crimes.”
A 42-year-old local man has been charged with aggravated burglary in relation to an incident at a house in Tivy Dale, Cawthorne on Monday 20 March. The man has been remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday 25 April.
A 46-year-old local man has been charged with two counts of burglary, possession of a knife/bladed article and going equipped for burglary in relation to an incident in Victoria Street on Thursday 23 March. He has been remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday 21 April.
A further two men who were arrested during the operation have been bailed pending further enquiries. Another man and a woman arrested on suspicion of burglary have been released with no further action.
