A strategy which outlines how Barnsley Council will regulate standards in private housing will be put forward to Barnsley Council’s Cabinet next week.

The Private Sector Housing Enforcement Strategy sets out a series of priorities to maintain and improve the housing conditions in privately owned properties across the borough.

In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of private rented homes in Barnsley and this continues to rise. It is recognised that the private rented sector makes a valuable contribution towards providing good quality accommodation and meeting housing need.

Although the majority of landlords maintain properties to a good standard, there are some who neglect their responsibilities leaving properties in poor condition. This can lead to many challenges for communities including a rise in crime and antisocial behaviour.

The Private Sector Housing Enforcement Strategy aims to promote efficient and effective approaches to housing inspection and enforcement to create safer and healthier private housing and communities.

Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities, said: “The council is aiming to raise standards in private rented housing throughout Barnsley, working with owners, landlords, letting agents and tenants to achieve this. The strategy outlines how we’re working towards creating a safer and healthier private housing sector, reducing the risk of crime and disorder to create a vibrant private rented sector.”
