A 20-year-old burglar has been sentenced to two years and five months in prison after swift police work resulted in his arrest and charge on the same day of the offence.
John Ellingworth Dickinson of London Road, gained entry to a property on Bowshaw Avenue in the Batemoor area of Sheffield, in the early hours of Saturday, 4 March and stole a car, bank cards, cash and Nintendo DS.
Dickinson then went on to use the bank cards in the city centre that day, purchasing items from a newsagents.
Officers were alerted to the fraudulent use of the cards by the victim, and immediately attended the store.
Dickinson had already left the store, however on viewing CCTV footage, they recognised his image and were able to locate him in Paradise Square.
On searching him, the car keys, bank cards and DS stolen from the property were discovered and he was arrested.
The vehicle was later found by officers abandoned in the Lowedges area.
Dickinson admitted to his crimes and was charged with burglary and fraud and remanded into custody until his court date. He was sentenced on Wednesday, 19 April at Sheffield Crown Court.
A/Sergeant Ryan Griffiths said: “Burglary is an incredibly intrusive crime that can leave the victim feeling distressed and uneasy in their own home because of the selfish and thoughtless actions of thieves.
“Due to the fast actions of officers we were able to detect this crime very quickly and reunite the victim with most of their property.
“We will always thoroughly investigate any report of burglary to ensure justice is obtained and those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”
