Today, Friday, 17 June sees the launch of an exciting new three year programme. Hear My Voice will encourage the people of Barnsley to dig deep into their imaginations and express themselves through poetry, written and spoken word.

The programme is open to all age groups and a wide range of events will be taking place at various locations around the borough, over a three year period. People are encouraged to come along and take part.

Activities will include performances at literature festivals, activities in local venues and libraries, workshops, writing competitions, school visits, and artistic residencies.

The project is designed to improve literacy and introduce a new way to express people’s ideas and feelings.

As part of the project, Barnsley’s first ever Poet Laureate has been appointed. The Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillian, will be the champion of the programme and will encourage people to get involved.

A private event to mark the launch of the programme will be taking place at the Cooper Gallery on Friday, 17 June at 10am.

The Mayor of Barnsley will inaugurate Ian McMillian as Barnsley’s Poet Laureate. Councillor, Sir Steve Houghton, CBE Leader of Barnsley Council, will also be in attendance along with Dan Jarvis MP, who will read a poem and announce a poetry competition.

Poems will be read by school children and the invited audience will be asked to join in a workshop led by Ian McMillan to create a special poem to mark the occasion and officially launch the Hear My Voice programme.

Ian McMillian, poet, said: “'I'm really looking forward to launching the Hear my Voice programme; this is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Barnsley, both young and old to make themselves heard through the power of the written and spoken word.”

Sue Thiedeman, Head of Culture and Visitor Economy, said: “We are really excited about launching this campaign which has been made possible by the generosity of Barnsley TUC Training. There are lots of interesting events planned that will really encourage community engagement and make taking part not only educational but fun.”
