Enterprising young people who hosted their own Dragons’ Den as well as doing a spot of DIY have been recognised for their hard work following a 12-week course.
Eleven young people, who have completed the Prince’s Trust Team Challenge, attended a graduation ceremony at Rotherham Town Hall yesterday (Thursday 27 July) along with special guests and dignitaries.
The Prince’s Trust Team Programme, delivered in partnership with South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, aims to help young people back into education or into employment as well as give them an insight into the work of the emergency services.
It is the first of its kind to be run jointly by the police and fire service anywhere in the UK.
Inspector Jenny Lax of South Yorkshire Police said: “Thursday’s event was to celebrate the work that these young people have done to transform their communities including gardening and decorating at Swinton Lock activity centre.
“The group of 16 to 25-year-olds have shown us their incredible skills both individually and in teams and we have seen each and every one of them grow in confidence and ability.
“Along with our partners, we are delighted to be part of this project which shines a light on the potential that our young people have and I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in the scheme.”
Through the programme, young people have achieved five vocational qualifications including Level 2 Food Safety in Catering, first aid and the Prince’s Trust award for community teamwork. They have taken part in a two-week work placement, three-day residential event, a tour of Dearne Fire Station as well as workshops on CV writing and interview techniques with members of the business community.
Team leader John Daley, of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: “This is the seventh programme we have run and we are seeing young people around the region benefitting from this once in a lifetime opportunity.
“I would like to wish all who took part from Dearne Team 3 the very best of luck for the future.”
