Learn about Darwin’s discoveries, medical advances and the strangely named substances our chemists sold in days gone by, at a new Victorian Science Exhibition being hosted at Clifton Park Museum.

See what the Victorians discovered in the fields of biology, chemistry and physics. Marvel at ingenious devices and ideas, or squirm at some of the more unpleasant objects and aspects of Victorian life!

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Working and Cultural Services, Councillor Taiba Yasseen, said: “A visit to Clifton Park Museum is always both fun and educational, and this latest exhibition is no exception!

“As part of your visit why not take a look at the new Victorian invention and innovation gallery? This shows innovations in our coal, steel, glass and brass industries, and things the Victorians invented that are still used today.”

Clifton Park Museum, on Clifton Lane, will also begin Sunday opening for the summer season from this weekend (1.30 – 4.30pm).

You can now recycle your old bikes and small appliances!

People can now donate old bicycles or small domestic electrical appliances to be used again in a new scheme being offered by Rotherham Council.

Rather than throwing the items away, or recycling them, residents can now see their items re-used instead by taking them to their local recycling centre.

The Council's Cabinet Member for Waste, Roads and Community Safety, Cllr Emma Hoddinott, said: “We are pleased to offer Rotherham residents the opportunity to have their old items re-used if they bring them along to any of our Recycling Centres. Every bike or television re-used is one that is not going into our waste.”

The Council, along with its waste partners Barnsley MBC and Doncaster MBC, has introduced the scheme to re-use appliances and bicycles in partnership with FCC Environment, Advantage Waste Brokers and Refurnish, a Social Enterprise organisation which supports employment of people from disadvantaged backgrounds or who have special needs. Refurnish also provides staff with volunteering, training and work placement opportunities

Meanwhile, if you’re planning a trip to your local recycling centre, the good news is that the lighter nights mean longer opening hours from the beginning of April - giving us all more time to recycle!

From Saturday April 1, the Council’s four Household Waste Recycling Centres at North Anston, Car Hill in Greasbrough, Lidget Lane in Bramley and Warren Vale in Rawmarsh will be open from 10.00 am - 6.30 pm.

Householders are asked to assist the recycling process by sorting out their waste before arriving at the centres. Separate containers are provided at each of the centres for many different types of waste and attendants are available to offer guidance to ensure waste goes into the appropriate containers for recycling.

Please remember:

• Magilla (North Anston) is closed every Tuesday
• Car Hill (Greasbrough) is closed every Wednesday
• Warren Vale (Rawmarsh) is closed every Thursday
• Lidget Lane (Bramley) is closed every Friday

Items that can be accepted under the new re-use scheme include:

People are invited to visit Wentworth Castle Gardens for a cracking time this Easter weekend.

There will be four days of eggciting activities to mark the garden’s final opening weekend before it closes to the public. It’s also the tenth anniversary of Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust opening the gardens, and organisers hope that people will come along to mark the occasion.

Easter activities will be taking place during the weekend, from Good Friday 14 to Easter Monday 17 April, from the popular Easter egg hunt, to egg rolling and a name the egg competition. There will be a special discounted admission price on each day of just £5 for adults and £3 for children aged two years and over, with free parking included. Gates will be open daily 10am to 4pm.

Visitors will be able to eggsplore the family trail around the gardens and there will be a children's prize for every completed trail. There will be plenty of things to look out for in the garden during this year’s trail. Regular visitors may also notice a few old trail favourites, and there will be a chance to spot the Easter bunny.

The gardens will be in full spring bloom, offering something for visitors of all ages to enjoy, and a photo exhibition about Wentworth Castle Gardens will be held in the conservatory from 11am to 3pm, on each of the four days.

Visitors are reminded that they will be able to enjoy refreshments in the café or on the terrace and the playground will be open throughout the weekend.

John Edwards, Chair of Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust said: “The gardens are looking lovely at this time of year and we really hope that many visitors will come to see them and enjoy the Easter activities. We’re incredibly proud of all that has been achieved in the last decade, especially the restoration projects that were made possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of so many people. Although it’s sad that it’s the final weekend of opening, it’s also a chance to celebrate all that has been achieved together.”

Six arrested in Barnsley burglary crackdown

Yorkshire Photography

News: Latest - distributed around Yorkshire April 09, 2017 10:42:37 AM

Six people have been arrested and a number of stop and searches carried out following an operation in Barnsley aimed at tackling and preventing burglaries.

Focusing in and around the town centre, the four-day operation saw officers apprehend five men and one woman in relation to reported burglaries.

Out of those arrested, two men have been charged and will appear in court next month.

T/Detective Chief Inspector Jon Cousins, said: “As a result of intelligence gathered over recent months, and a continued commitment to eliminating crime across Barnsley, we decided to run a dedicated operation to protect the most vulnerable areas in the town and identify repeat offenders.

“Both plain clothed detectives and uniformed officers worked on this initiative, working into the early hours of the morning to respond to any reports of burglaries, as well as actively patrolling the areas to pick up on any suspicious activity.

“On the first day of the operation a man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of burglary after neighbours reported hearing banging at an address in the Honeywell area.

“Over the course of the operation a further four arrests were made and a total of eight crimes detected. We charged one man in relation to three of those crimes.

“Not only that, but through extensive foot patrols we managed to engage and speak to a number of people, offering advice on how they can keep their homes safe and the importance of reporting a burglary or an attempted break-in to us.”

A total of six stop and searches were also carried out as part of the operation.

T/DCI Cousins added: “We are always looking for opportunities to engage with the public and this operation enabled us to do just that.

“Burglaries often leave people afraid to be in their own home and can have long lasting impacts on victims, not to mention items of sentimental value can be taken. Our officers are committed to tackling burglaries across Barnsley, and residents can expect to see further targeted operations carried out across the district in the future to ensure offenders are arrested and brought to justice for these intrusive crimes.”

A 42-year-old local man has been charged with aggravated burglary in relation to an incident at a house in Tivy Dale, Cawthorne on Monday 20 March. The man has been remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday 25 April.

A 46-year-old local man has been charged with two counts of burglary, possession of a knife/bladed article and going equipped for burglary in relation to an incident in Victoria Street on Thursday 23 March. He has been remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday 21 April.

A further two men who were arrested during the operation have been bailed pending further enquiries. Another man and a woman arrested on suspicion of burglary have been released with no further action.

South Yorkshire Police and Rotherham council work jointly to raise awareness of hate

Yorkshire Photography

News: Latest - distributed around Yorkshire April 09, 2017 10:42:37 AM

Officers and members from the council have been engaging with the public and raising awareness of hate and community justice today (Wednesday 29 March), to highlight the partnership work and action taken to keep our communities safe at the Rotherham Partnership Together event.

The event held at New York Stadium in Rotherham from 2-4pm, sees different local partners come together to demonstrate the activity and plans put in place to make a difference to the community through effective partnership working.

At the community focused event, PC Nicholson along with partners from the council are providing information on hate and the new ‘Hate Hurts. Report it.’ campaign, launched to raise awareness of the hurtful and long-term impact hate has on victims and encourages reporting.

Throughout the afternoon information has been given out and members of the community have had the opportunity to speak about the new campaign, what hate is, how it can be reported and what is being done by the police and the council, through their community justice panel, to tackle the issue.

PC Nicholson has commented on the event and the importance of this action: “There are many people that are unaware of what hate is and the channels available to report it. To change this and highlight the severity of hate and the devastating and lasting impact it can have on both victims and witnesses subjected to it, we have launched our new 'Hate Hurts. Report it.' campaign.

“The campaign, which was developed and designed with the input of different community groups, specifically highlights how hate makes people feel and aims to provide victims with a voice and encourages reporting.

“The new campaign is just part of the action taken to tackle hate and encourage both victims and witnesses to report it. In Rotherham, I have been working with local PCSOs to visit local colleges, raising awareness amongst the sporting community through engagement events and promoting Operation Solar- Rotherham’s anonymous reporting channel. Similar work and local engagement activity has also taken place across Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster.

“Everyone at SYP is committed to tackling hate and we will work wherever possible to raise awareness, provide support and encourage reporting, so we can tackle and prevent further hate.”

Rotherham Council’s Cllr Emma Hoddinott, Chair of the Safer Rotherham Partnership, added: “Abuse based on prejudice and discrimination will not be tolerated in our communities and victims of hate crime shouldn’t suffer. We hope people will come forward to report incidents, it can be as simple as sending an email about what you've experienced or seen."

If you are in the area and would like any advice, support or further information about hate and the reporting channels available, pop in and speak to PC Nicholson and our partners at the council.

Rotherham man sentenced to seven years in prison for child sex offences

Yorkshire Photography

News: Latest - distributed around Yorkshire April 09, 2017 10:26:01 AM

Yesterday (Tuesday 28th March), Alexander Palmer, 62, of Selborne Street, Rotherham was sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of six counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency with a child, at a trial at Doncaster Crown Court last week.

Palmer, who was arrested by police in 2015 after an investigation had been launched, committed the offences on his victim between 1998 and 2002.

Throughout this time period Palmer abused his position of power and trust to target a vulnerable victim for his own sexual gratification, giving no thought to the impact his despicable actions were having not only to the victim but their family as well.

Detective Sergeant Thomas Woodward who led the investigation into Palmer has said: “The victim in this case was extremely brave, and showed great courage to come forward and report the sexual offences committed by Palmer. The victim continued to show great strength throughout the whole criminal justice process and further witnesses also deserve a lot of credit for providing supportive evidence in the case.

“Palmer abused his position of trust with the victim’s family for a number of years to be able to freqent their family home and abuse the victim. This was pure evil behaviour from Palmer and I am pleased with the sentence.

“If there are any further members of the public who are victims of such crimes and are wondering whether to report it to South Yorkshire Police, they can be assured that each report will be treated very seriously, will be investigated thoroughly and wherever possible offenders will be brought to justice.”

If you would like to report anything to police, please contact us on 101 or send an email to enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk.

*Please note all victims of sexual abuse are granted lifelong anonymity
