The winner and runner up of Barnsley’s Dental Superheroes poster competition have received prizes on behalf of their schools at a ceremony at Barnsley Town Hall.

Savannah Galvin, 10 years old and in Year 6 at Wombwell Park Street was the winner, and Theo Fletcher, 7, in Year 3 at Worsbrough Bank End was the runner up. Each won money for their schools to spend on educational resources.

Competition judge, dentist Tony Harness of the Local Dental Committee, said: “It’s been a pleasure to be involved in this competition and provide prizes for the schools. The quality of the entries was so good but Savannah’s Dental Superhero’s favourite healthy food and Theo’s Dental Superhero’s favourite pet really stood out. Congratulations to them both, I’m sure their families and schools are very proud of their achievement.

Cllr Jim Andrews, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health, added: “Tooth decay is the main oral health problem affecting children in Barnsley and has significant impacts on the daily lives of children and their families including pain, sleepless nights and time missed from school and work. The Dental Superhero campaign urges children to brush twice daily and ask for free fluoride varnish during their regular trips to the dentist.”

To encourage more young people to get the campaign message, the council’s Public Health team offered prizes for schools for the most imaginative and eye-catching entries submitted by Barnsley primary-age children.
