Come and sponsor Rotherham's looked after children to help them go on a trip of a lifetime at this year's Rotherham Show.

They will be on hand as part of the 37th annual Rotherham Council run show – where residents will also be able to have their say, get advice and talk to council officers and staff from a variety of services.

The show starts at 10.30am this Saturday and ends at 5.30pm on Sunday at Clifton Park. At the fair Rotherham's Looked After Children's Council (LACC) will be shaking buckets donated by Sheffield's Signs Express to help them raise the cash they desperately need to get them on their dream holiday.

The LACC have their hearts set on an educational visit to Poland in order to fulfil the childhood dream of one of their troupe – Simon – who wants to make the visit in memory of his dead father, who originated from there. They are planning to do marathons and walks to raise the cash and are hoping people will donate to their cause at the show.

They will be based in the Rotherham Council marquee, near the entrance to the show, where other council officers will also be on hand to offer advice about everything from housing to fostering to Early Help.

Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Lyndsay Pitchley said: "There is so much to see and do at the Rotherham Show and this year promises to be one of the best yet.

"Alongside all the amazing attractions, Council officers will be at the show on both days to offer advice and support on a whole range of services. So please come down and see us. This is a great opportunity for people to ask those in charge about the services on offer."

Both the Rotherham adoption and fostering teams will be present at this year's show on both days. Anyone wanting an informal chat about either adoption or fostering can pop along and ask any questions to staff.

The Early Help team will also be on hand in their mobile bus where officers will be available to give advice and help on a range of services from youth services to children's centres.

The Public Health team will be out in force encouraging as many people as possible to have their say over the future of a raft of services. There will be something which affects most people in this consultation exercise so it is certainly worth finding out more. Many current services may have to change in future due to Government cuts and the team are urging people to have their say on what is important to them.

Residents will have the chance to give their thoughts on neighbourhood improvements including creating pleasant and attractive neighbourhoods. Streetpride will also be on hand to sign up volunteers for neighbourhood litter picks.

Meanwhile residents will also be able to see the masterplan for Rotherham town centre and beyond at the show and can talk to officers about plans to secure potential investors to encourage further regeneration.

Council tenants will also be able to speak members of staff from the housing service on a range of topics including tenant involvement, the Council's housing strategy, the impact of changes to welfare benefits, repairs and maintenance, and other consultations.

Or how about becoming a Shared Lives carer? The Council is looking for positive, compassionate people who are interested in providing support for vulnerable adults as an option for residential, day or short breaks. Come and talk to the staff to find out more.

The Young Inspectors will also be in the Council marquee and walking round the show, with the aim of recruiting more volunteers to join them. They will also be conducting a child centred borough survey.

Other Council services and partnerships also be represented at the show include Rotherham Intermediate Care Centre, Connect Support, suicide prevention and the Rotherham Together Partnership.

The annual show is one of the largest free events in the North of England, bringing in around 70,000 people to the town. With a wide range of live music, entertainment, activities, stalls and exhibitors to enjoy, there is something for the whole family.

Numerous old favourites are once again returning including the horticultural show, vintage vehicle rally, hamster show, brass bands and the music marquee. The Main Arena will be hosting the Paws for Thought dog display team, Coventry Corps of Drums and Phoenix Falconry on Saturday. And on Sunday, the Little Nippers terrier racing display team, the Mini Shetland Troupe horse display and the Stannage International Stunt Team will be performing.

There are also some brand new activities including an emergency services day on Saturday and a cat show on Sunday. And for the first year ever, the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a spectacular 'Proms in the Park' concert from 7pm-9pm on Saturday. This special evening of classical music is ticketed with all proceeds going to the Titans Foundation and Friends of Rotherham Music. Tickets are £20 and are on sale via the Rotherham Theatres box office and the Proms in the Park event.
