Did you know, police officers can search anyone they believe is carrying a knife?
And did you know, just for possession of a knife, you’re looking at up to four-years behind bars?
Whether you agree with the laws in the UK or not, the fact remains if you carry a knife, there is always the intention you will use it, and by using it, you’re risking losing your life, in more ways than one.
Our knife crime campaign #DropTheKnife is aimed at raising awareness and educating those who choose to carry a knife, of the serious consequences they face whether this be prison, injury or even death, and to reinforce the message that it will not be tolerated in South Yorkshire.
Over 50 knives and bladed weapons have been recovered during the knife surrender that ended last week (Monday 31 July), with samurai swords, zombie knives, bayonets, swords and kitchen knives now in police possession. In total, that’s 54 weapons that cannot be used to intimidate, threaten and in the worst case scenario, fatally injure someone’s husband, brother, father or any loved one.
As part of the campaign, we have launched this video, to highlight what you think is an innocent night out can result in you being on the ‘sharp side’ of the law for the rest of your life, from taking a knife out with you, even it’s just ‘for protection’.
When you’re convicted for possession of an offensive weapon, you will have a criminal record. If you use the weapon and kill someone, you’ll be looking at a life sentence behind bars.
Carry a knife. Lose your life.

Adrian Pogmore sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment
Latest news in Yorkshire: August 09, 2017 09:26:19 AM
Adrian Pogmore was sentenced on Tuesday 8 August 2017, to 12 months' imprisonment for misconduct in public office. The sentencing took place at Sheffield Crown Court.
He pleaded guilty to the offence on 18 July 2017. The offence relates to the misuse of police video recording equipment within a police helicopter.
Mr Pogmore was dismissed by South Yorkshire Police in 2015 on the grounds of discreditable conduct, following an internal investigation.
The Deputy Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police, Mark Roberts, said: "This kind of behaviour by an officer is completely unacceptable, and the outcome for Mr Pogmore is consistent with the decision we took in 2015 to dismiss him from the service."
We are unable to issue a police custody image of Mr Pogmore, because he was never arrested or in police custody. Instead, he was summonsed to court through the post.

Forge Island footbridge works completed ahead of schedule
Latest news in Yorkshire: August 05, 2017 01:08:54 PM
Work on the pedestrian bridge linking Forge Island to the town centre has been completed more than a week ahead of schedule.
The work – which started on Monday 24 July and was expected to last three weeks – has seen the removal of the roof and boarded-up side panels to make the bridge ‘light, bright, and airy’.
The work, carried out by Peninsula Access Ltd, is part of improvements in and around the Forge Island site as work continues to prepare it for development.
The site, which Rotherham Council purchased from Tesco in February, is set to play a major part in plans to regenerate the town centre.
Following demolition of the former Tesco building, a Masterplan* was published last month and the Council has also acquired the Law Courts, adjacent to the site.
As the Council now prepares to seek a partner to help deliver the plans – a formal tender will go out in the Autumn - it is also opening up one of Rotherham’s ‘well-trodden’ landmarks.
Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy Cllr Denise Lelliott said she was pleased to see the footbridge re-opened again so quickly.
She said: “We hope that by opening it up it will be much more pleasant for people to walk through on their way into town and address some of the issues we’ve had reported about anti-social behaviour.
“It’s great that the works were completed ahead of schedule to minimise any inconvenience to shoppers and others who use the car park on a regular basis.”
Forge Island currently has 300 parking spaces for visitors to the town centre, which are free all-day at weekends. In addition, shoppers can park for free for two hours in the car park’s ‘red zone’ on weekdays.
Following the demolition of Tesco, work is currently taking place to provide a further 200 temporary parking spaces which will also be free all day each weekend.
York Road car park, near the town centre, also has 100-bay free all-day weekend parking.

Kiveton residents to benefit from road improvements
Latest news in Yorkshire: August 05, 2017 13:05:35 PM
Kiveton residents will see improvements to a major route through the village as Rotherham Council’s 2020 Roads Programme begins repair and resurfacing works in the area.
Motorists are being warned they may experience potential disruption from Monday (7 August) when resurfacing works begins on the B6059 Station Road/Wales Road and temporary traffic lights will be in operation.
The following week (w/c 14 August) work will begin on and adjacent to the rail bridge, meaning that the road will be closed to traffic at the bridge, until Friday 1 September.
During this time there will be a diversion in place as follows: Wales Road B6059 (west) - A618 (north) – A57 (east) – Kiveton Lane – B6059 Station Road and vice versa.
Pedestrian access across the bridge and to the station, as well as access to side streets, will be maintained at all times.
Colin Knight, Rotherham Council’s Head of Service, Highways, said: “We apologise for any disruption experienced by local residents and businesses, however this work is essential to improve the roads in the area, and we hope people will appreciate the benefits once the work is completed.
“We aim to keep residents and businesses informed and if anyone has any questions, staff on site will be happy to talk through any concerns,” he added.
From April 2017, the Council is investing an additional £10 million in improving roads across the borough, as part of the 2020 Roads Programme. Works will be aimed at resurfacing many of Rotherham's estate roads, complementing the wider package of road maintenance. Local councillors have been asked to nominate streets in their local communities to benefit from this extra funding.

Cutting food waste
Latest news in Yorkshire: August 05, 2017 12:53:02 PM
Published on Thursday, 3rd August 2017 in Council news news
Thousands of South Yorkshire residents are taking part in a national campaign to waste less food.
Love Food Hate Waste has been on tour in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham talking to local people in town centres and supermarkets about cutting down on food waste and saving money into the bargain.
The BDR (Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham) Waste Partnership has run the campaign in conjunction with food waste reduction charity WRAP.
A series of 21 events included cookery demonstrations featuring leftovers, and useful giveaways such as recipe cards, re-usable shopping bags, rice scoops and measuring spoons. Many people signed pledges to throw away less food and promote the idea to friends and family on social media.
The campaign gained a big following on Facebook and Twitter. Lots of tips were exchanged on storing food, using up leftovers and making less waste.
According to Community Education Liaison Officer, Abi Cox, based at BDR’s waste treatment facility at Manvers, around 40% of leftover household waste is made up of food which need not have been thrown away.
“The campaign was really well received by the public. People were happy to discuss items they put in their bins and we were able to offer some tips and advice they found useful,” she said.
“It’s great because wasting less food benefits everyone. We can all save up to £60 a month per household by cutting down the food we put in our bins and obviously everyone would love an extra £700 a year to spend on things like holidays, family days out or simply to make life more comfortable.
“For the Councils it’s brilliant because it cuts down on the amount of food waste we have to collect and treat. And it also gave us an opportunity remind people that if they do have to throw food away, please either compost it or wrap it carefully before disposing of it in the bin.”
Rotherham Council’s Assistant Director for Community Safety and Street Scene, Karen Hanson, said: “The whole campaign is about making simple changes to the way we shop, the way we store foods, and how we use the food we buy. No-one likes throwing away food, and there are lots of little things we can all do which add up to a really big change without great expense or effort.”
The BDR Waste Partnership is made up of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham councils together with 3SE, a consortium of Shanks, an international waste-to-product business and SSE, one of the UK’s leading energy companies.
The award-winning facility at Manvers deals with 250,000 tonnes of leftover household waste a year from 340,000 homes across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, turning it into useful products including electricity. Since it opened in July 2015, more than 96% of waste has been successfully diverted from landfill. More than 50 jobs have also been created in the Dearne Valley.
Across the UK, a staggering 7.3 million tonnes of food waste is thrown away each year, at a cost to UK householders of £13 billion a year.
