Council lends support for sports firm

Two more companies have joined the Evolution development at Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP).

SBD Apparel and ERIKS UK have now moved into Units 5 - 7 at Evolution, a high-quality development of industrial units designed to offer modern, flexible business space and ideal growth opportunities for companies in manufacturing technology related sectors.

SBD Apparel is a UK manufacturer of premium sportswear and support items; specialising in strength and fitness training. Business Investment Manager Andrew Nettleton, from the Council’s Regeneration arm, RiDO, has worked with the company in offering assistance in finding suitable premises and support with recruitment.

ERIKS UK is one of Europe's leading industrial services partners providing engineering expertise to a variety of industries ranging from food and drink to oil & gas. The ERIKS Group of companies already includes technology centres in Barnsley and Doncaster, and a distribution and engineering service centre in Sheffield.

Damien Wilson, Rotherham Council’s Strategic Director, Regeneration and Environment, said: "I'm pleased that two more companies have chosen sites on Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Park. It underlines the location as the UK's premier advanced manufacturing technology park and we wish them every success."

Funds secured for key Rotherham project

Rotherham Council has successfully secured funds to purchase Forge Island.

Sheffield City Region Combined Authority this week agreed to the Council’s bid of £1.5m to pay for the land. The monies will be provided as a bridging loan pending a future grant.

The Authority originally shortlisted 16 schemes from 35 bids in 2016 – three Rotherham Council bids were accepted pending full business cases.

The other two bids were for road traffic improvements near Wales, Rotherham, and the purchase of the Advanced Manufacturing Park’s Technology Centre.

Rotherham Council’s Strategic Director of Regeneration and Environment Damien Wilson said the monies will enable the Council to go ahead with its plans to buy Forge Island from Tesco and prepare it for investment.

He said: “Forge Island is a key development for the borough and central to restoring the town’s night time economy. We are already seeing interest around this site with new restaurants opening, and plans submitted to the Council for further developments. We are looking forward to Forge Island becoming a vibrant leisure quarter to complement the existing retail quarter.”

Rotherham Council hopes to agree a purchase with Tesco in February, with demolition of the current building to follow to enhance the site’s attractiveness to future developers.

Detailed development proposals for the site are currently being prepared alongside the town centre masterplan. An initial draft of the plan is expected in April.

In addition to Forge Island, other future developments for the town centre include Westgate Chambers (subject to planning permission), a Higher Education Campus, and a new bus station.

Did you witness Barber’s Avenue collision?

Police are asking for witnesses to come forward following a reported fail to stop collision in Rotherham last month.

Between 5.30pm and 5.40pm on Tuesday 31 January, it is reported that a silver or grey vehicle was involved in a collision with a silver Ford Mondeo at the roundabout where Barber’s Avenue meets Aldwarke Lane.

The collision is believed to have caused the Mondeo to spin, leading to a further collision involving a pedestrian walking on the footpath.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The silver or grey vehicle, whose make and model is unknown, did not stop at the scene and it is believed it would have front-end damage to its headlights and bodywork.

Officers now want to hear from anyone who was travelling in the area at that time, who may have witnessed the collision or who may hold dashboard camera footage.

Female first for Royal Marines

Barnsley College Public Services and Sports students have been invited to take part in the Royal Marines ‘Look at Life’ course, where they will undertake an intensive week-long training exercise with one of the UK’s elite forces, the Royal Marine Commandos, at their training centre in Devon.

What makes this whole experience unique is that for the first time in the Royal Marines recruitment history females have been invited. Fifteen female students from Barnsley College will be the first in the country to undertake the Look at Life course.

The students will partake in a variety of activities including the famous Royal Marine Commandos endurance course, and the challenging bottom field and assault course. They will also learn the basic skills of a Royal Marine Commando, and will eat, sleep and train with potential Royal Marines undergoing basic training under the supervision of some of the Royal Marines’ most experienced instructors.

Chloe Fitzsimmons, a Level 3 Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) student, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to follow in my Dad’s footsteps, as he was a Royal Marine Engineer. I’m really proud to be one of the first females to undertake the Royal Marines Look at Life Course and be able to push myself like he did.”

Joseph Campbell, Public Services tutor, added: “This is a historic event for both the college and the Royal Marines as they offer the Look at Life course to a group of females for the first time in their history. We are extremely proud that our college and students have been chosen to participate in this historic event. It is a great honour and we look forward to meeting the challenges set out by the Royal Marine Commandos.”

Code club for kids at Barnsley Central library

Central Library is proud to present their new Code Club, teaching children aged between 9 and 11 how to use coding.

Families are welcome to attend, where colourful computer programming software will be available to develop their coding skills and abilities. In these sessions people can expect to learn more about how to create computer games, mobile apps and animations.

Two drop in sessions will take place on Saturday 25 February and Saturday 4 March running from 9.30am to 11.45am. Additional sessions are planned but dates are yet to be confirmed. These events are free, with no booking required.

Student produces winning design

Her Worshipful the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Linda Burgess congratulated HND Graphic Design student, Alice Firth on her winning hoardings design which is a boarded fence that will be assembled around the new Skills Village in Barnsley.

Barnsley College and University Campus Barnsley Art and Design students were given a professional client brief, had access to the Skills Village site for inspiration and was given a presentation by Project Director of Henry Boot, who explained the purpose further.

Alice was presented with £30 in Amazon vouchers and her design will be professionally printed and displayed inside boarded fencing installed around the new Skills Village site.

Alice Firth, HND Graphic Design student, said: “I was really happy when I found out that I had won the competition and it gave me a great sense of achievement. It has been an excellent experience and the help and support I received from my tutor was fantastic. It will be great to see my work used in a professional capacity and I am excited to see my design printed and assembled on to the hoardings at the Skills Village.”

Evan Wood, Art, Design and Fashion Curriculum Leader, added: “All the students worked really hard and in a professional manner. This was a great opportunity for our students to showcase their work on a larger scale and it was a real test of their skills.”

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts will teach you how creative industries work and enable you to develop links with employers.

You will work with the latest equipment, gaining skills in lighting, sound and stage management and be assessed on live productions in our Electric Theatre.

On successful completion you can progress to degree level study or employment in careers such as Sound Engineer, Lighting Designer or Stage Manager.

College tutor Tom Flanagan said: “This is an exciting course for anyone who wants to learn about and work within the production industry. Previous students who have studied in this area have gone on to attend Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance and Backstage Academy.”
