Old Trinity Headstone, Wentworth

THE DEARNE BORDERS

An incredibly old headstone in the Old Trinity Cemetery in Wentworth, near Rotherham. Dated 1670 of the interned death the history of the graveside occupant could even date back to the late 1500's. Astonishing.

It's latter years, as seen here accomodated a sewing business "Smartgirl". The building has long since been demolished and its land sold to private ownership.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park On The Run

Latest news in Yorkshire: May 01, 2018 11:33:22 AM

A record 1100 runners yesterday (30 April 2018) raised over £6200 to help save endangered animals in the wildest of all charity fun runs at the award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Many of the runners decided to dress up as various animals to add colour to the run as they unleashed their inner animal selves to take part in the Run for Wildlife 5K race at the innovative park.

There was even a junior fun run around the pathways of Lion Country for children aged from four to eleven.

Sponsorship and entry donations will help the Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation, which supports animal conservation and welfare projects around the world.

YWPF Trustee Cheryl Williams said: “It was a marvellous day and a record number of runners.’

“Everyone had so much fun and the money raised will allows us to fund even more of the vital projects YWPF supports all over the globe. I can’t thank everyone so much for their support.

“But if you missed it, it isn’t too late. The next Run For Wildlife will be held on October 14th and applications open soon!”

YWP’s unique collection of some of the world’s most beautiful and at risk species, including Amur Leopards and Tigers, the country’s only Polar Bears and Meerkats, made a memorable route for the runners.

Ms Williams added:” The race really is special and runners loved the unique opportunity to see the animals on a charity run. The whole day had a brilliant atmosphere and many of the runners stayed on to enjoy a day at the Park afterwards.”

The success of the charity run comes days just after Curly’s Athletes, the local sports organisation that organised the Run For Wildlife, was awarded a prestigious gold award at the National Running Awards for the organising the best 5KM race in the whole of the UK.
"We were thrilled at news of this well-deserved award and we are proud to be recognised for having the best 5K race nationally.” said Ms Williams. “We can't thank Curly’s enough and all those that took part for helping raise so much money for the important conservation projects we support."

Jonathan Frary, manager of Curly’s Athletes, added:"A huge thank you to the YWP team who have worked hard with us to make this event a great experience for runners and spectators.”

The park also celebrated on Sunday the final day of the 30 day Run For Wildlife Virtual Run on Sunday with nearly 150 participants including overseas participants from over 12 different countries taking on the challenge to walk, jog or run their way to reach 30K to raise funds for Project Polar – a programme for polar bear conservation and welfare.

The next Run For Wildlife is on 14th Oct and applications for the race can be found here: https://www.yorkshirewildlifepark.com/events/

Going large for Tour de Yorkshire

Latest news in Yorkshire: May 01, 2018 11:13:53 AM

Creative Recovery have been set their biggest challenge to date to create a large-scale urban land art masterpiece to celebrate Tour De Yorkshire and its start in Barnsley on Friday the May 4th, 2018.

The land art is located on the top of Barnsley Market's Multi-Markets Multi-storey car park. Scaling 59 metres by 47 metres, totalling at a whopping 2773 square metres, the team have used over 200 litres of paint, supplied by a local recycling scheme, to complete the job.

This artwork was designed by 'Recovery Through Art', Creative Recovery's core visual arts project. 25 people were involved in the design process and over 30 supporters have gathered to help with the painting effort for the equivalent of 4 weeks straight.

The Graffitti futurism and Bauhaus Poster style influenced design features 2 cyclists speeding through the Barnsley townscape. The background reflects the town's transition and regeneration as the cyclists travel from the industrial landscape into the new. The prominent Town Hall is featured behind the second cyclist.

Hayley Youell, a local artist and a co-founder of Creative Recovery, speaks of the positive impact on people's recovery when working on ambitious large scale creative projects.

"When you are in the depths of depression, lost in grief or exhaustion from life, everyday tasks can feel unfathomable. The thought of getting up, having a shower and even eating can feel like an enormous task. At Creative Recovery we support each other and work hard together towards realizing our vision and goals, surpassing expectations of what people hold of themselves and of what life has to offer. Hopelessness turns to new found hope. In the words of a participant, "being involved with Creative Recovery and seeing the completion of projects, makes you realise that it's possible in your own life too".

Creative Recovery is a small arts based charity which supports people in recovery from mental health and drug & alcohol issues in Barnsley. It is a people led organization that uses creativity to bring about social change, inspire community spirit and boost wellbeing. They provide a programme of weekly projects and special events providing a safe place and opportunities for people who are vulnerable and isolated to meet others, reconnect with passions and live life to the fullest.
